Soundies were the precursors to music videos. Produced during the years 1940 to 1946, Soundies were made to be seen on self-contained, coin-operated, 16mm rear projection machines called Panorams. They were located in nightclubs, bars, restaurants and other public places. The programs were produced by various companies such as Minoco and RCM Productions, headed by FDR's son, James Roosevelt.
Soundies covered the gamut of musical styles from contry and western to the big band swing music of Stan Kenton and Tommy Dorsey. Many included cheesecake segments -- burlesque routines or shots of women in bathing suits -- specifically intended to attract wartime military personnel on leave. Appeals for war bonds and other patriotic messages were included.
THE ORIGINAL SOUNDIES DVD features twelve patriotic-themed songs and twelve Hillbilly-style productions. Watch Hillbilly Tillie from the collection.
Included in the direct transfer from the original films are:

On June17, 1894 the very first boxing match was filmed. Thomas Edison operated his motion picture camera as Mike Leonard fought Jack Cushing. The fight went six rounds and made history. Edison then hired Jom Corbett to fight Peter Courtney for the September 7, 1894 bout filmed at the Black Maria, his indoor movie studio.
Watch the rare Leonard-Cushing fight as well as the 1894 bout between Gentleman Jim Corbett and Peter Courtney. Bat Masterson, the famous Old West Sheriff referees the first heavyweight championship fight ever filmed ... the March 17, 1897 bout between Jim Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons in Carson City, Nevada.
Also included is the 1899 title defense bout between Jim Jeffries and Tom Sharkey. While the original Edison film has been lost, you will see the fight as filmed from a camera hidden in a cigar box. Read what customers say about the DVD.
